With what has arguably been my most anticipated movie of the year (note, this is a year that saw/will see the release of Episode III, Sin City, H2G2, War of the Worlds, Fantastic Four and Constantine to name a few), DC and Warner saves the Batman franchise and finally got back into the comics-to-movie race.

The Death of Poodle

June 7th, 2005

In the end, it wasn’t the ants that did him in, or starvation, or anything like that. I just let him down. I wasn’t paying attention.

If you’ve read this blog since last year, you’ll know who he is. He was a hamster, of the cutest variety. And he was ours, Jean’s and mine. He was our boy, he even spent some time with her. And now he’s gone, and not for the first time I find myself praying that there are animals in Heaven, because he’d be there, and he’d be the one watching over us now.

He’s been listless ever since those accursed ants swarmed all over him last week - my fault, I should have kept him in the bathroom where there’s water around his bowl. He scratched out his left eye, but he seemed to be recovering until yesterday. He even finished half of the banana I gave him. I should’ve taken him to the vet, but I didn’t - too many excuses, none of them with a whit of merit now that Poodle’s gone.

I buried him under some plants by the window of Ninay’s room. It felt odd, holding him. He was cold, and heavier than usual. It was probably the only time I held him that he didn’t try to scamper up my arm, and it’s such a sad sad thing. I failed him; I’m a bad caretaker.

And in his death, Poodle gave me one last lesson: you’ve got to take care of the ones you love. And I will.
