On Malu Fernandez: we have feelings too you know

August 20th, 2007

Late to the fray againplaying gigs as much as I can before I bid Manila adieu — but as I’ve always maintained, there can be no statute of limitations on outrage. So after finally catching up on my RSS reader, I came across this little tidbit about an article published in People Asia by a certain Malu Fernandez, who also writes for Manila Standard. The salient points:

However I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.

While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga san ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I thought I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.

On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.

There’s more to it, amazingly enough. There’s even an “apology” — the term half-assed doesn’t really do it justice — that’s as toxic as the hemlock she should be made to drink. Repeatedly. To wit:

The bottom line was just that I had offended the reader’s socioeconomic background. If any of these people actually read anything thicker then a magazine they would find it very funny. Most people don’t get the fact that they need bitches like me to shake up their world, otherwise their lives would be boring and mediocre.

Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other. Although I could mention that it is easier to understand someone who has a lower socioeconomic background that would entail a whole other page and frankly I don’t want to be someone to bridge the gap between socioeconomic classes.

Allow me to channel Al Pacino for a moment, and present Miz Fernandez with my acerbic wit. A few disclaimers: I’ll be quoting some words by that stellar actor that you might find offensive. Take solace in the fact that you are not the object of this tirade. Or leave, if it’s not your cup of tea. I’m not an OFW, and don’t have relatives who are, but I’m around the same demographic of the families that they leave behind. In the past, I have even been critical of people migrating to other countries if they don’t need to. My friends know me as being harsh with Fil-Ams, because most that I’ve met have been incredibly overbearing and boorish. I still personally find swearing allegiance to another country unacceptable, but as I’ve come to realize, patriotism is an expensive luxury. That said, anytime you’re ready:

You stupid fucking cunt. Where’d you learn your trade, you stupid fucking cunt. You idiot. You fairy.

Ricky Roma, Glenngary Glen Ross

Miss Fernandez,

There is a line between being hilariously offensive, and being just offensive, and it’s not a thin one. We know it for what it is, and we know it’s best to keep such thoughts to ourselves or shared only with others of similar disposition. It’s called tact. Other terms, like “good judgment”, “sensitivity”, or “not-having-shit-for-brains” may also be used. It’s a fairly common practice to people not named “DOJ Secretary Raul Gonzales”.

Well, you crossed that line. And judging from your initial article as well as your “apology”, you are aware of that fact. You knew it when you were writing your article, and you definitely know it now. Because some things are better left unsaid. Think it all you like. Snicker about the other 95% amongst your friends all you want. We care even less about what you do than you think. But you shouldn’t have gone and said it.

Because that’s just plain offensive.

Excuse us for not being born with a silver spoon. Excuse us for not being able to afford your “culture”. You see, we actually need to work for a living. What luxuries we have, blood, sweat and tears were spent to acquire. Ours is a culture that was forged in our reality, our situation. We do not aspire to live the lives that are beyond our means, nor wallow in cultures not our own. We like what we like, and we are what we are.

But do not presume for even a second that you are better than us. Do not think for a moment that you know us. And don’t you dare put on airs.

You wear your social status, deserved or otherwise, like a crown, thinking it makes you better, smarter, more entitled. It does not. You confuse — proudly — socioeconomic brackets with intellectual capacity, and many have disabused you of that notion. Here’s some more.

Our lives are also rich and colorful, and we experience the same breadth of emotions as you. Those of us that have the time or the inclination read books heavier than your boobs and thicker than your skin. We enjoy the sublime flavors of isaw, goto and the squid kebabs in Quiapo as much as you would your caviar, saffron-laced paella or whatever it is people like you eat. We appreciate not having to wait too long in line for the MRT with as much enthusiasm as you appreciate not waiting too long for your baggage to be checked in on one of your jet-setting flights. We greet friends and relatives just as warmly as you greet the elites you suck up to.

Just because you are higher than us your the social ladder doesn’t mean you’re better. It means you’re lucky. We do not deserve to be dismissed, least of all publicly. We are proud, and rightfully so. We do not deserve to be humiliated unjustly simply because of what we are. We are thinking breathing creatures not unlike you. We must be respected, and protected, never rejected, as all must be. We are somebody.

Your moment of Zen:

I Am
Somebody
I Am
Somebody
I May Be Poor
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be Young
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be On Welfare
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be Fool
But I Am
Somebody
I May Be Small
But I Am
Somebody
I May Make A Mistake
But I Am
Somebody
My Clothes Are Different
My Face Is Different
My Hair Is Different
But I Am
Somebody
I Am Black
Brown
White
I Speak A Different Language
But I Must Be Respected
Protected
Never Rejected
I Am
God’s Child

I really don’t have a grudge against people with delusions of grandeur. I only have compassion for them. They’re sick people, they need psychiatric help. Malu Hernandez shouldn’t get fired for expressing her mental illness. Rather, she should be deposited into an institution, asap, and be given enough tranquilizers and psychotropic medications to sedate her acerbic wit.

it’s not even a joke to begin with, hell, it wont even pass for one, jokes should be funny (at least most of them are). this is one bonafide insult to a class that’s not of hers. It’s like implementing the caste system all over again…

that woman clearly lacks appreciation to what the OFW workers does for their country… and the “something-doers” does not deserve any of the many many disrespectful insults she hurled at them…

tut tut… its a shame to belong with the same nationality as this person…

magsama kayo ni tim yap…thats all i can say.

moks: long time no see ah! napamura ka pa tuloy hehe

i actually thought she was joking…hrrnggh….

@yevah: ang nakakalungkot sa nangyari, alam nya ang pinanggagawa nya. at unrepentant pa din. at nagmamalaki pa.

@via: even if she were tho. mlq3 said it best on his blog e; cursi. pretentious.

whoah… just saw the picture of who this malu fernandez is… wow…

i wouldnt pack that much pride with me if i’m that huge… and damn woman… the nerve hehehe

Well look at it this way, Malu Fernandez is a “lifestyle” columnist writing for pretentious rags in the Philippines, I mean, how lame can she get? And she flew coach to save up on a few pesos.

Dahling, you flew coach! You can complain all you want…the bottom line is you’re no diffrent from the OFWs. We have our own private idea of hell…my kind of hell is being stuck with a bunch of snobs, like you, in coach! Oh and Jo Malone is sooo last season. Honey, the OFW’s are the ones keeping the economy afloat…shame on you.

You’re nothing but a pig, Malu Fernandez..im sure nilalait morin lahat ng pinoy na sumasakay sa tricycle, jeepneys, because you are riding in your expensive car..you hate all who eat tinapa and tuyo..kasi masarap kinakain mo, pati kapwa mo baboy kinakain mo…you hate all who study in public schools..kasi nag aral ka sa exclusive school…you hate people who buy their clothes in ukay ukay, kasi mga damit mo signature, un nga lang mukha kang kama na nilagyan ng bed sheet…nilalait mo ang mga laborer na pinapawisan habang nagtatrabaho, at ikaw ay nasa air conditioned room, kasi ang lakas mong mag sebo, sa pag kababoy mo, kelangan frozen ka palagi, para ma preserve ka BABOY!
gaun oks lang ba na nilalait ka BABOY?

change your nationality bitch!!!! you’re a disgrace to the Filipino people.

[…] been tossed, regarding the acerbic wit of Malu Fernandez and her detractors. I’ve presented my one peso (roughly 2 cents) on the matter. Others, weighing in, have taken the high road, a path that I, not unlike Robert […]

Malu Fernandez exemplifies the educated yet ignorant socioeconomic elites in our country. I have met many affluent filipinos and, although some of them share Malu’s sickening egoistic hegonism views, many of them are humble and down to earth.

This pathetic little excuse of human fecal is obviously demented. She hates herself so much (for possesing such beastly, disgusting, nauseating, odious, repugnant, repulsing, and revolting appearance . I know I just committed an Ad Hominem but, then again, Quid Pro Quo) that she takes instant gratification and self-fullfilment in putting people down.

Her opinions (she is entitle to one, of course) have not only offended the OFW’s, but it also offended the majority of the working class filipino people. It is sad to admit that there are people like this in our society… people who are heartless, myopic, ignorant, nefarious, rotten, infernal, and just down right despicable.

Instead of just minding her own business and live in her own little world of luxuries (there is nothing wrong with that), she had to let the world know how better she is, and her circle of friends, than the rest of us.

I would rather have a conversation with a poor yet hardworking pinoy than socialize with the likes of her.

Now, to personally attack the turd. Don’t you ever wonder why she is still single in her 40s? You would think that with all her wealth, she should at least be able to find a guy who would marry her for money. Could it be that even the poorest of all paupers cannot stomach of being with a Hag like her? It is something that makes you go… hmmmmm.

DESPICABLE PUS BRAIN! well actually a no-brainer at all.

a walking cellulite. jesus christ, what a pity. i was reading that article and continously laughin’ at her oversized bod. she will never fit in any seat coz she is so XXXL! Axe smells better than her melting fat acidic sweat.yuck, pasmado! SHE ACTUALLY GOT THE NERVE, EH?

a person of the second order in a former classification of mental retardation, above the level of idiocy, having an intelligence quotient of 25 to 50.

i had a stop over in Dubai on my way to Paris just for shopping, OK Malu?!
I even talked and smiled to OFW’s and felt a sense of relief! that im not alone in this foreign country. why u didnt have this in you?!

now now, since you have tickled my angsty self, this is for you, Dear Fatso!

could u please die?

*evil laugh*

very very well said mr jorge cosgayon. finally, someone who addresses the real issue, not her corpulence.

I have never seen such bigotry in that article of Malu Fernandez. More so with her response. I agree with the other bloggers that her article and response is indicative of her insecurity considering her size and looks. I think she should have been fired by the publications and not allowed to resign.

is it true that she is also a merchandiser for Rustan’s and Shopwise ? She shold be fired also from those establishments. Or we boycott those those establishments.

I feel terribly sorry for such insensitive lines of Ms. Malu Fernandez “From Boracay to Greece”. If she writes for lifestyle section, I pray that such lifestyle of insensitivity must not be tolerated. She has to bear in mind that the OFWs kept this country going no matter what their smell is. While I admit that she speaks rather candidly, yet her lines were written rather contemptuously. It is such a pity that a newspaper section which should have been the window of finesse was made by Ms. Malu Fernandez as a platform of insensitivity, contempt and arrogance. Have we relegated finesse to rudeness? If higher society could be such, then what right do we have to expect better from the rest? Really ad nauseam.

I used to travel long haul from work site to work site, economy class; even if I hold gold membership to almost all of the airline alliances because I wanted to interact with other OFWs while in transit. My supervisees are all foreigners. I have expats from almost all continents reporting to me. I am the boss and I am Filipino. And mind you, all of my supervisees have distinctive smell, worst than the cheap cologne or maybe worst than the smell of Malu Fernandez’s expensive perfume. But come to think of it, no matter how expensive the perfume one wears, it does not, to the very least, add to his/her sense of humanity much less to finesse and decorum. Smell or no smell, I respect my staff, nationals and expats alike and I do not use smell as reference in writing their performance appraisals.

If we do not have sympathies with certain groups of people at least we should be constructive and engaging. Words do hurt; let us be responsible in dispensing them. Journalistic license is not an excuse for insensitivity and arrogance. Truth to be productive, should always be constructively articulated.

I am an OFW and I am proud of it. I may smell unpleasant to Malu Hernandez, but I am part of those who contribute billions of dollars to the Philippine economy every year to keep it going.

There is it then,,, she just sent People Asia and Manila Standard Today’s circulation go down. And no publication wants that eh? Who’ll hire now?

Oh by the way she owns LUSCIOUS in Glorietta and Gateway.

Poor woman. What was she thinking?

wow! very well said, jorge.
i hope this post of yours will be read by malu fernandez herself.

sana natuto ka na malu fernandez…….

Great post Jorge. Can I forward it to family and friends? Thanks!

You couldn’t have said it any better. Two points:

On acerbic wit and journalistic license: If I had called her fat that PAGASA mistakenly declared an eclipse after she walked by their telescopes and wrote it down in my newspaper column, would that save my soul from eternal damnation?

On the so-called elite: Does anything they do contribute to our nation’s economy? (Maxing out Daddy’s/Husband’s credit card at Louis Vuitton doesn’t count) When they receive their salaries (hahaha) bi-monthly, does that in any remote way affect the peso-dollar exchange rate?

If the answer is NO, then it is best to remember: If you don’t (or ahem, won’t) lift a perfectly manicured finger to make a difference, then shut up and leave those who do alone. They have enough on their minds without gits like you mouthing off about Jo Malone and flying coach.

The Manila Standard and Malu Fernandez are easy targets, since the paper publishes, what? 10,000 copies a day? But take a look at toilet bowl cleaners of the world?“>WHO gave her the idea that OFWs are lil more than toilet bowl cleaners of the world

DJB: i’m not a de quiros apologist (well, i don’t think so), but as offensive as his remarks may be to OFW’s, Malu Fernandez was offensive to me personally, for reasons I’ve stated. That, combined with the tone and source of the comments, put things in perspective. For some odd reason, a fashionista’s comments on me and mine are just simply more offensive, because I mean, really, where does she get off?

mata pobre and fernandez family, from the matriach to the children. mga sisters and brothers din nya mga mata pobre, e lahat naman ng mga sisters ay retokada kasi ang brother nila ay ang cosmetic surgeon na si manuel fernandez. and mig zubiri is malu’s nephew dahil sister nya ang mom nito. si malu, wala ng pag asa kahit retokohin, at kung ano ang bantot ng itsura, ganun din ang bantot ng ugali.
