Ducat goes postal; I play Double Jeopardy

March 29th, 2007

I know a thing or two about losing it — and I’ve seen my share of people who are bat-shit insane — but things like these always leave me in shock: Armando Ducat Jr held almost 30 children in his day-care center hostage for close to ten hours, in protest to the current political situation.

Inasmuch as I can definitely see myself going postal — particularly with the way this regime is handling things — I draw the line at innocent kids. At innocents. At people, in general. Fine, seeing as I get scared shitless even just looking at a gun, my going postal would be a pretty funny, short-lived affair indeed. Drastic, but funny. That’s why it never ceases to amuse me when people label me as leftist or left-leaning; I have more than enough bones to pick (pun intended) with the NPA and their violent shenanigans. Change, reform: I’m all for that. Taking to the hills, levying “revolutionary taxes”, being violent nuisances? Do not be absurd.

I digress: back to Ducat. It would seem he’s done it before, holding hostage a couple of priests some twenty odd years ago, only then it was about unpaid dues he was owed. He once protested against high rice prices by pulling a wagon loaded with sacks of rice about 100 kilometers (60 miles) to Manila. In 1998, he climbed a tower to protest against the candidacy of a politician who he said was not a real Filipino citizen. GMANews.tv

Any other time, I’d be cheering this guy on or laughing my ass off, as loony as he is. But, consider:

He took children — children! — hostage for what amounts to nothing more than a huge publicity stunt. This time, he says, it’s about corruption in the government, how he’s sick of it, and how GMA’s trying to make things right and that the people should unite behind her. He’s also calling for the candidates in the upcoming elections to be “enlightened”. Curious. Then Bong Revilla steps in, playing his role to as hostage negotiator to a T. Curiouser. Chavit Singson, an administration Senatorial candidate, alleged jueteng lord and former gambling buddy of Erap, makes an appearance, along with MMDA chairman Bayani Fernando and Manila Mayor Lito Atienza — all of whom are solidly pro-GMA. Curiouser and curiouser!

I’ll take Dirty Politics for $200, Alex.

The Enrile Ambush. Let’s see: what was the terrorist act Marcos used as a soapbox for justifying his political agenda — Martial Law?

$400.

Gringo’s coups. What are: ridiculous attempts to reclaim power by sowing terror while at the same time preaching about good governance?

$600, Alex.

The Oakwood mutiny. What is: Gringo 2.0? Erap and his cronies used Trillanes and co. to air out GMA’s dirty laundry, valid or not. It failed because of wrong timing and a lack of public support.

Dirty Politics for $800.

Armando Ducat Jr. What is: the Enrile ambush 2.0? In a nod to the tactical genius of Enrile, political hopefuls use (dare I say, tweaked?) this horrific incident for free publicity to boost their visibility and popularity — at the same time, getting some poor sap to shout the praises of Malacañang’s resident squatter.

I wonder what’s behind the $1,000 panel?

I hate the fact that Ducat used the children as an instrument of his…[insert agenda here]…but by god, I admire his cause.

I swore at Cayetano and Coseteng for taking advantage of the situation and grandstanding blah blah. Ahh, but I’m also guilty. Tumirada ako agad against the administration because of the “international embarrassment” thingy that I almost disregarded the “innocent children” part. (asar talaga yung “nakakahiya” line na yan, grrrr) But then again, I did express my disgust for what Ducat did.

Haaay. His cause was god/great/wOw; if only his means was equally or even a little close to being noble….

Shari: I agree with you. I also admire his cause but not his ways in making it known. And yes I agree that this incident has given the country another shame.

Jorge: Are you suggesting that this incident were staged by Malacanang?

@Shari: Ducat is clearly unhinged, and he’s a repeat offender. As for his cause being noble — his methods pretty much put everything he says into perspective. How concerned can you be about your fellow man when you hold a gun to kids? It’s asinine. And how the hell did he even get a permit to run a day care with his record?

@Jason: Stop putting words in my mouth ;) They used it in the same manner Enrile staged his ambush — to further their political ends. Look at how it ended: Ducat was pacified by the promises given by Bong Revilla, Lito Atienza and Chavit Singson — promises of a better future for the kids etcetera etcetera. They come out smelling like roses. But should such promises, such reforms, need to be extracted (with violence, I might add) rather than expected? It makes me sick to my stomach that it took a gun-toting lunatic to get these so-called public servants to do something that would benefit people other than themselves. It’s a slick maneuver worthy of Enrile himself — who disguised himself from being the architect of Martial Law to a scion of EDSA to a crusader against the PPA.

Of course, I find it curious that that gun-toting loony was protesting against corruption while calling for the people to unite behind gma, whose government has been rightly labeled the most corrupt in Asia.

not putting words in thy mouth my friend :-), I was only asking if you are suggesting that malacanang staged this….anyways, I think we both agree that Ducat is a loose cannon. I just hope this guy is put away for good.

Sir Jason: Sure, it might be an embarrassment, but shouldn’t we focus more on the issue rather than the “image”? It’s what really pulled my plugged — Ermita insisting that it’s an international embarrassment. We, the Filipinos, electing corrupt officials in public office and letting them take advantage of us? Now that’s an embarrassment! :)

Fafa Jorge: Point well taken. And it’s a very valid one. Something that I even thought of myself. Still, you can’t blame me (or can you?) for admiring the reason why he did it. May idadagdag pa sana ako, kaso you already said it na pala: it took a gun-toting lunatic to get these so-called public servants to do something that would benefit people other than themselves.

@Shari: No I can’t blame you :P truth be told, when I first heard about it, I thought — “well, finally someone snapped!”

Hello Shari: Yup….I also agree with you on that. I was only saying that he did more harm than good. I also think that Ermita’s statement was not in the right timing and was uncalled for at that time. Regardless, he has point.

As for Ducat, I hope he is put away for good. If the parents won’t file any charges as earlier reported, I hope the government does.

I dont know, i think what Ducat did was somehow commendable -lost for a better fitting word-, but then again, i saw more of hysterical paranoia more than disgust (but then again somethings wrong with me)

Dud grenades, a promise that he wont hurt the children, a promised 7pm surrender, negotiations by far-from-professional negotiators (hostage taking should be taken seriously… and… chavit? seriously?), everything seems to be just an incrementing paranoia…

correct me if im wrong though… im just baffled by the fact that the police really trusted Chavit, who i think doesnt know how to handle a grenade, to hold the explosives after the whole commotion is reaching its end.

Pathetic, Absurd, Shady… adjectives that could fit the Philippine Political Theatrics is just plain disgusting…

@Jason: I agree absolutely, and for once I laud the people at the palace for not turning this into a greater media circus that it already is — unlike the grandstanding antics of Chavit and co. Ducat’s ill-reasoned attempt at “social justice” may be just that, ill-reasoned, but by giving in to his demands (never mind for a moment what they were), a dangerous precedent has been set.

@Shishini: Sinabi mo pa. It was handled poorly by everyone involved, Ducat included. I’m as baffled about Chavit’s involvement as you (Chavit? Seriously? LOL), though we all know what his motives are. The bottom line is that what Ducat did was an act of terrorism; the fact that some of his demands are being met sympathetically is beside the point. There’s a reason for having laws and processes. Unfortunately, the way this administration has discouraged democratic discourse — media under attack, activists, witnesses and journalists dropping like flies, political opposition being harassed — it’s not surprising some people take to the hills, or in Ducat’s case, go nuts.
